The Sussex Exchange is a striking, contemporary venue in a tranquil setting with views over ancient woodland in St Leonards on the English south coast. It’s a high-standard conference, training and meeting centre, a boutique cinema plus an elegant restaurant with an emphasis on fresh local produce.

The venue has been designed to high environmental standards incorporating a large biomass boiler, rainwater-flushed wcs, exceptional thermal insulation, natural ventilation, recycled timber plus shingle roofs to encourage biodiversity.

Our initial marketing work included identification of a target market for the facility, development of primary marketing messages plus input into the services delivered to ensure a close fit with the brand.

We also helped to identify a name for the business, building on the idea of an ‘exchange’ where business people could get together.

To support this, we then delivered a comprehensive portfolio of design work and collateral.

We designed a visual identity for the business, featuring ears of wheat to reflect its rural setting and the area’s history of corn exchanges:

To create a supporting image library, we commissioned a photoshoot, with an emphasis on producing images showing the facility’s tranquil rural setting and panoramic woodland views as well as the quality of its facilities:


We applied the new identity to stationery and created a website, again emphasising the distinctive rural setting as well as the facility’s sustainable credentials:

We created further marketing collateral including:

  • press adverts and advertorials
  • menus for the restaurant
  • artwork for the venue’s walls

We also designed signage – including the main nameplate for the building and roadside signage promoting the venue to passers-by.

We further marketed the facility with an editorial and advertising campaign, regular e-newsletters, a social media programme using Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, Facebook and Pinterest and hospitality events to encourage influential people to spread word of mouth awareness.
